Finding My Passion through Project GROWS - Alissa Moquin
My name is Alissa Moquin, I am a recent graduate of Blue Ridge Community College with my AAS in Agricultural business management. When I started school, I had no idea what exactly was for me because my interests in agriculture were so diverse. But throughout my time here at Project GROWS and as the Youth Leaders in Agriculture Mentor, I’ve found exactly what I want to do.
On June 1st, I walked into work and was greeted by seven YLA students who were all unsure of what we were doing. Soon after that day they all started to learn more about one another, the process of the work they were doing, and knowledge that truly makes up how the food is produced. We all encountered a summer full of on-the-farm days that consisted of pulling weeds, harvesting and processing along with hands-on learning experiences. We then saw the impact of our work by helping at the Mobile Market, and getting to lead informational activities with the community.
While they were learning about the general knowledge of agricutlure, I was learning more about myself through the wins and losses I would encounter with them: the skills that I have gained and the things that I can work on more going forward, the teaching moments that failed and the moments that I believed I truly inspired them. Ultimately, I learned more about myself than I imagined I would have in only three short months. It has created a deep passion for education within me.
This internship experience has been truly remarkable, from leading and educating a group, being able to get to know them personally and watch their love and curiosity for agriculture grow has been such a wonderful experience. Without the support and learning experiences from other staff, I wouldn’t be in the position I am, with the confidence I have.
Like I said at the beginning, I never fully knew what was meant for me in the agricultural world. I’ve always been back and forth on a career but after my time and experiences at Project GROWS, I think I know exactly what’s meant for me: educating young people in agriculture.
